Following the Threads of History – Britain’s Bayeux Tapestry

Eleven Pilgrim Quilters set off for Reading for our latest Textile Heritage Tour, this time to see the remarkable full-size Victorian replica of the Bayeux Tapestry at Reading Museum.

We had arranged a private guided tour, which proved a real highlight. Our guide brought the story and the stitching to life, pointing out fascinating details that many of us admitted we would otherwise have walked straight past.

There was plenty to interest us as stitchers – as well as the extraordinary story behind this Victorian recreation of one of the world’s most famous pieces of textile history.

Afterwards, almost everyone continued to Bill’s for lunch, giving us time to chat about what we’d seen and enjoy being together.

The verdict from our travellers summed it up beautifully: a fascinating tour, a great guide, good food and lovely company.

Another very enjoyable Pilgrim Quilters adventure – and another reminder of just how much history can be told through textiles.
